5 Tips to Help You Have a Great Newborn Session
One of my very favorite types of sessions would have to be in home sessions, especially newborn in home sessions. As a photographer, I absolutely love photographing people in their own spaces. I know that for some families the thought of someone coming to your home to photograph you can be stressful so today I am sharing 5 tips to have a great newborn session
Remember that I’m documenting a day in your life, so keep it real by wearing what you’re most comfortable in and by being yourself. Neutral colors typically work best. Casual clothing is perfect and bare feet look most natural in a home setting.
For baby I recommend swaddled, in just a diaper or in a neutral colored onesie. I know there are so many cute baby clothes but it’s rare to find any that fit a newborn properly or that won’t be distracting in photos.
I promise, your home does not have to be perfect. It’s your home and it’s supposed to look lived in, and if you have little ones, it’s VERY well lived in. You don’t need to feel like you have to redecorate or hire a cleaning service. I’m there to focus on you and the interactions with your family. Instead, focus on decluttering which means tidying up surfaces such as coffee tables or night stands and then hiding the rest in the closet until I leave.
Natural light is the best light for an in home session. For this reason, while taking your photos I will turn off all lamps and overhead lights and use just the light coming through your windows. Some clients ask, “What if my home doesn’t have a ton of natural light?” No worries, I’m pretty skilled at using what natural light I can find and I always bring some flash equipment just in case I need it.
I always tell client’s prepare for me to be at your home for about 2-3 hours. I know this sounds like such a long time to be getting your picture taken, however I won’t be taking your pictures the whole time. Your baby will determine the flow of our session and if they get fussy we will take a break for you to soothe them or if they need to break to have a feeding we will do that as well.
Relax. If your baby gets fussy or won’t goto sleep, don’t worry. A baby can sense your anxiety and we want to keep the environment as relaxed as possible. I am not in a hurry and I will not leave because the baby isn’t sleeping or cooperating. Take some deep breaths and enjoy this time with your new baby. My goal is for you to enjoy this experience as much as I enjoy capturing it.
